Family History Genealogy
The Friends of the Gerald R. Sherratt Library at Southern Utah University is sponsoring a Family History Research workshop on Wednesday, 4 p.m. in the Instruction Module on the main level of the Library. Local historian and Special Collections Librarian Janet Seegmiller will be teaching the one-hour workshop.
The workshop will include hands-on instruction of online genealogy resources. Anyone who has joined the Friends of the Library at the Associate Level is invited to attend the workshop at no charge. Others are welcome to attend for a fee of $10.
During the workshop, Seegmiller will demonstrate a number of resources available to family history researchers, including one of the newest tools available to the Sherratt Library: Footnote, a comprehensive database containing over 50 million full-text documents including American, cultural, family, military, Native American, political and social historical pieces.
In a collaborative project with the Sherratt Library, Footnote recently added the Deseret Iron Company Account Book from Cedar City, years 1854-1867.
Another valuable resource to be highlighted is Brigham Young University’s Family History Archives. This is a collection of published genealogy and family history books that are now available full-text online. The archives include family, county and local histories and books and magazines on genealogy. Books scanned into the Family History Archives come from numerous collections including the FamilySearch Family History Library, BYU Harold B. Lee Library and the LDS Church History Library.
Seegmiller will also highlight sources for accessing historic newspapers online in full-text and demonstrate how to use HeritageQuest, a database made available to all Utahans through the Pioneer database project. This unique collection is rich in primary genealogical and historical sources, with coverage dating back to the 1700s that can help people find their ancestors.
This is the second of three workshops sponsored by The Friends of the Sherratt Library during this spring semester. The third and final workshop will feature Free Open Source Software that’s Available to You, taught by Reference Librarian Scott Lanning on April 28.
